Remember to choose colors within two or three shades of your current hair color for a natural look.
Types of Clip-In Hair Extensions
There are two types of clip-in hair extensions, natural and synthetic. Natural clip-in hair extensions are constructed of human hair and can be treated just as you treat your own hair. Natural clip-in hair extensions can be washed, dried, curled, straightened and dyed. They are considerably more expensive than synthetic clip-in hair extensions, but require far less maintenance and are durable enough to last a few years. Synthetic hair extensions are comprised of various synthetic fibers (polyester, silicone and monofilament to name a few) and are typically very heavy compared to natural hair. When blown, synthetic hair stays flat (due to its weight) or sometimes blows in the opposite direction of the natural hair it is paired with. Synthetic clip-in hair extensions cannot be dyed, and are difficult to wash and maintain. It is for this reason, it is wiser to go with natural clip-in hair extensions.
Choosing Your Clip-In Hair Extensions
After you choose which type of clip-in hair extension you want to wear, you can choose the color and texture. For a natural look, choose clip-in hair extensions that are close to your own hair color and texture. If you plan on trying different hairstyles, clip-in extensions with straight hair will be the most versatile. Do you want to add volume or length? This will determine how many clip-in hair extensions you will need. To add volume, 6 to 8 clip-in hair extensions are required; to add length, you will need at least 8 extensions. If you are looking for both volume and length, up to a dozen clip-in hair extensions will create the look of long, thick hair.
Clip-In Hair Extensions
Clip-in hair extensions can be purchased at your local beauty supply store or salon. There are two types of clip-in hair extensions to buy: assembled and ready-to-use, or pieces that must be assembled. Clips that are assembled can immediately be applied to the hair. Extensions that are not ready for use must be sewn together. Assembly involves sewing individual clips and loose hair together to create a weft (the clip-in extension that adheres to the hair). Prices vary between the two types of clip-in hair extensions, and creating your own weft is more affordable. If you are pressed for time or do not want to bother with creating your own weft, you can purchase the ready-made clip-in hair extensions. Otherwise, purchase the hair, clips (which look like small combs that snap shut), hair thread and a hair needle.
Make Your Own Clip-In Hair Extensions
To make your own clip-in hair extensions, gather all of the materials stated above plus a pair of scissors. You will sew the hair extension to the clip and create a secure clip-in hair extension. Take the hair extension and fold it in half if it is too large for the clip (in this case, essentially you are sewing both woven halves and the clip together).
Sew the hair extension so it is flush against the clip, so this will not be noticeable when you are wearing the clip-in hair extension. This will add volume and length, and will also be easier for you to sew. Now take the clip and place it on the top of the extension, in line with the woven part of the extension (where the hair comes from). If you fold the extension in half, make sure you hold the extension tightly in place, pressing the hair down as you sew.
Make sure the clip has the teeth facing you. Thread your needle just as you would for something around the house, and push the needle through the small hole at either end of the clip (both ends have holes). Be sure to pull the thread through tightly to create a secure clip-in hair extension. Continue to sew the hair extension to the clip, moving through each hole in the clip and finishing at the opposite end. Cut any remaining thread once the extension is secure.
Cutting Clip-in Hair Extensions
After your clip-in hair extensions are ready to be worn, you will need to have them cut. This should be done by a professional hairstylist, as she will know how to best blend the clip-in hair extension with your natural hair. Apply the clip-in hair extensions as you intend to wear them, so the hairstylist can create a hairstyle that will work for you.
